On April 17th, 2008 I visted the Chico State BMU Auditorium for the 3rd anual Mister and Miss Chico State Scholarship Contest. There were 13 entries, 5 young men and 8 young women, eager to showcase their incedible commitment to the school and community, with hopes of receiving a $2,000 scholarship. Host Rob Felicano and Hostess Lorraine Moore interduced themselves and the panel of judges as well as last year's Miss Chico State.
The contestants were young women Rosie Russo, Jayme Goldstein, Angelina Gamble-johnson, Giavonni Blake, Alsion Templeton, Lynessa Williams, Savanaha Lamp, Michelle Wells and young men, Mark Hererra, Scott Amick, Spener Blair, Jesus Torres, and Tyson Harris.
There were five rounds. The event began with evening wear, where each contestant came out in his or her professional attire, with the hope of impressing the judges and getting the full 10 points. The interviewing began during the first round and gave us a good impression of everyone. After walking the runway, contestants picked questions from the hat and hoped to be awarded the full 15 points with their answer. Yes, some were more nervous than others, but who wouldn't while answering a tough question infront of a huge crowd?
The next round, my personal favorite, was the talent round. There was piano playing, dancing, showing of art via powerpoints, singing, poem reciting, martial arts, a powerpoint of cookie baking, electric guitar show, and everyone showed a great deal of confidence. This was worth 10 points.
The third round was evening wear. Everyone looked very smashing and was worth another 10 point. The second interviewing took place at this time and worth another 15 points. The questions were a little more personal, focusing around what they might do if they were awarded with the Mister and Miss Chico State award and personal experiences they have encountered.
The judges then counted up points and called the top eight contestants. Giavonni, Savanaha, Lynessa, Michelle, Jesus, Spencer, Scott and Tyson. A final question a piece was asked. Nervousness filled the air, during these tough questions, because anything said could and would be counted for or against you. While the judges were making their decision and counting up points, the winner of 2007, Miss Chico State came out to speak. She told us about her experience, how much of an impact she made on others. It was really great to hear people reaching out to younger generations and teaching ones that might be less fortunate than us. The next thing that happened was the awarding. All contestants got a trophy. Second place winners, Giavonni and Jesus were also awarded $250. Thrid place winners, Michelle and Scott were also awarded $150.
The 2008 Mister Chico State was awarded to Spencer Blair. A young man full of confidence, personality, determination and humor. Miss Chico State was awarded to Lynessa Williams, a strong willed, passionate and determined young woman.
