Hestia vs. Icarus

February 10, 2008 / by MHarbaugh

For the first 20 years of my life I lived at home. Looking back on those years I roughly remember my life going as such: go to school, get homework done, dedicate myself to sports, visit the gym at least five days a week, work on the weekends to make some cash, and hang out with good friends outside of school when I get the chance and am not exhausted from life. Now of course we all know that’s not exactly how it was for all of those 20 years, but those are my strongest memories of the past 5 years of my life. It never really bothered me that I lived at home after high school, while attending community college. After all, living on my own would have meant there would be less money for me to spend on fun things because I’d be cashing out at least a good 600 dollars to live in the lovely east bay.

A few months before it came down to the moment in time when I would pack my bedroom into a u-haul and move to Chico, I finally came to the realization of what a home-body I had been. Yes, I socialize as much as I could while still living at home and knew I was a very independent young woman, but it wasn’t until the past summer that I realized I would finally have the chance to fly from my nest and experience life without the parental units. My surroundings would be completely different and other than a small handful of people, everyone and everything around me would be unfamiliar. How exciting!

Even though I had a very structured and “Hestia” lifestyle prior to my moving to Chico, it surprisingly hasn’t changed as much as I thought it would. I’m able to experience a few new things, but I’m in college, paying a lot of money for an education and this is my main focus. We all need time to put our pencils down and relax, and I do have the opportunity to do so, but exploring the world and spending money to do so, just can’t fit into the agenda right now. Maybe some day…..after college, and after becoming financially comfortable I will ge the chance to enjoy a more “Icarus” lifestyle.

When we talk about our lifestyle, that probably should have something interesting for the readers--a new idea, an interesting narrative or an interesting style.
